Help choosing a ring
Ring size here is the circumference of the finger in millimetres — size 53 means 53 mm around. Below you will find how to measure it, and how to find it out discreetly when the ring is meant to be a surprise.
Find rings in your size
Measuring your own finger
- Cut a strip of paper about 5 mm wide, or take a piece of thread.
- Wrap it around the finger where the ring will sit — snug, but it must pass over the knuckle.
- Mark where the strip overlaps and measure the length up to the mark in millimetres.
- That number is your size. 53 mm = size 53.
Worth knowing
- Measure in the evening. Fingers are thinner in the morning and swollen in the heat; an evening reading is closest to the average.
- Fingers on the dominant hand tend to be half a size to a full size larger.
- A wide band sits tighter — above 6 mm wide, allow half a size more.
- Between two sizes, take the larger. Making a ring smaller is always easier than making it bigger.
When it has to stay a surprise
The most reliable route is to borrow a ring they already wear — a few minutes is enough. Pick one worn on the ring finger of the hand the new ring is meant for.
Measure the inner diameter
Lay the ring on a ruler and measure the inside width in millimetres. Multiply the diameter by 3.14 and you have the circumference, which is the size. 16.9 mm across → size 53. The table below does the arithmetic for you.
Trace it on paper
Put the ring on paper and draw around the inner edge with a sharp pencil, then measure that circle through its centre. Press lightly — the ring must not shift.
Press it into soap
Push the ring into a bar of soap or modelling clay to leave a clean impression, and measure that. Put the ring back before it is missed.
Ask her closest friend
Women swap ring sizes with each other far more often than with men. A sister or a best friend often knows it by heart — and can keep quiet about why you asked.
